SUPER EASY TIPS
This month... STRESS
Last year it was reported that 74% of UK adults felt as if they were unable to cope. Dr. Deborah Lee (doctorfox. co.uk) has shared her top tips on how we can lower stress in our lives.
1 Understand
We are all under pressures every day, but sometimes these can become overwhelming. Most frequently, stress is due to a combination of factors. Our bodies jump into action as if we are in the ‘fight or fright’ system and symptoms of stress can be a rapid pulse or dizziness.
2 Breathing techniques
Start by sitting upright in a comfy chair. Breathe in slowly by sucking in your rib cage, but force your tummy out. When you do this, breathe in for a count of four, hold it for seven, and then breathe out for a count of eight.
3 Mindfulness
When you are in a full meditative state, this is a stage of deep rest, where your thoughts become more ordered and you have lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone.
4 Exercise
Just getting up and going for a brisk walk is enough to raise the levels of your brain endorphins, giving you a natural high. It helps your mind detach from your worries, too.
5 Laugh more
Don’t underestimate the therapeutic effect of having a good laugh. It has been shown to reduce symptoms of depression, soothing stress.
6 Connect with others
As human beings, we need to feel connected to others. So, you must build your connections with other people. Start saying yes instead of no to invitations. Why not join a class or group in something that interests you?
7 Try an app
Free mental help apps can help, too. Try the Healthy Minds Programme or Calm. The NHS also offer a range of mental wellbeing audio guides.
8 See your GP
If your stress is bad enough to be interfering with daily activities, such as your ability to go to work, it’s time to see your GP. Book an appointment or call The Samaritans on 116 123.
