Pick Me Up!

Reach Out To Sister?

- Linda, 41, Penzance

My 3-year-old son often plays with my sister’s little boy, who’s 4, and they’ve always got on. But recently, my nephew hit my son with a toy. I carefully told him not to do it as my sister came into the room. She was furious, convinced I’d told off her son. I tried to explain, but we had a huge row.

We haven’t spoken for two weeks. I don’t want to go on like this, but I don’t feel like I did anything wrong. Was I wrong to discipline my nephew?

yes

Pick Me Up! reader Debbie Hadden says, ‘It isn’t your place to say anything to her lad. You should’ve waited for her to come back, then told her what happened. Perhaps you’ll have to agree to disagree.

Tell her you should’ve handled it differently, and next time you’ll tell her so she can choose what course of action to take regarding her son’s behaviour. It isn’t worth falling out over. I’m sure your boys are missing each other.’

NO

Pick Me Up! reader Shariah Mear says, ‘If he doesn’t hear it at home he’s going to somewhere. Also, most kids listen to other adults instead of their parents, as they know that means more serious trouble.

I think your sister got defensive because she doesn’t like the thought of someone else telling off her son. I’d be the same with my 3-year-old. Give your sister some time to let it go, then I’m sure things will get back to normal.’
