Pick Me Up!

Something borrowed, something blue…

When her plans hit a hitch, katie Thomson, 29, from Edinburgh, had the men in uniform to thank…

-

Popping open a bottle of bubbly,

I had to catch my breath.

‘Cheers, hubby!’ I grinned to my new husband Chris, 30. ‘Thanks, wifey,’ he winked. After four years together, we’d tied the knot in a beautiful church this 14 July.

Now, sitting in the back of a lovely, black, vintage Bentley, we headed to our reception.

We’d got engaged last March on a Scottish beach. And I’d been meticulously planning the day from start to finish ever since!

Chris had known better than to interrupt me in full planning mode. I wanted everything to be perfect: flowers, dress, car…

And, so far, everything was going to plan.

But, as we sipped bubbly from our plastic glasses on the way to the reception, the Bentley jerked, nearly spilling fizz on my long, white dress.

We stopped at a set of traffic lights, then the car wouldn’t start again. ‘What’s wrong?’ I asked the driver, worried.

We’d stopped at the top of a hill and were slowly rolling down…

The driver tried to start the car again, but nothing worked. Thankfully, the hill wasn’t too steep and we slowed to a stop. ‘The fuel gage is empty,’ Chris pointed out to the driver. ‘I’ll fill up,’ the driver said. He had a full can in the boot. Then he turned the key… Nothing! But what about our reception? Our friends and family are expecting us! Panicking, Chris started rummaging through his pockets for his phone…

But who could we call...a taxi? Not in this dress, surely! Then... Knock, knock! Looking out of the window, I gasped – it was the police!

Two burly officers were standing outside our car…

I wound down the window.

‘How can I help, officers?’ I laughed.

‘What’s going on here?’ one asked, grinning.

I explained that we were stuck. ‘How about a lift?’ I asked. ‘Our pleasure!’ the other policeman replied.

They led the way to their yellow-and-blue police van.

A far cry from our glossy, vintage number...

But, in the back of the van, we fast-tracked it to our venue, with glasses of bubbly still in our hands!

Chris and I giggled all the way like naughty schoolkids.

‘People might think we’re being arrested!’ I laughed.

Just as we arrived at the castle gates for our reception, the minibus with our friends and family drove in.

They were crying with laughter, watching an officer trying not to jam my dress in the door. One copper slid the door open and another was even holding my flowers and handbag as I got out!

We smiled for the cameras, and our wedding photographer made me pose with the two police officers!

So much for all that wedding planning I did!

But the boys in blue certainly saved our big day.

Thankfully, our two-week honeymoon in Bali and Hong Kong went to plan. And, no, we didn’t get to have a ride in the back of a police car abroad!

Still, if I could go back in time, I wouldn’t change a thing about our wedding day.

Chris and I definitely had something borrowed, something blue…

And something flashing!
