Missing sleep

QI’m revising for my exams and often cram overnight to get all the facts in. My mum gets cross and says that I should sleep. Surely I can catch up on sleep after the exams? Becca, Brentwood

AStaying up all night will actually reduce your memory, as sleep ensures that your brain stores facts appropriately. Sleeping well both before and after learning enhances memory, so you should definitely change your strategy.

The menopause?

QUp until three months ago, I had regular periods, give or take a couple of days. But now I haven’t had one for three months. I’m 48. Have

I just been through the menopause? Gloria, Blackburn

AFull menopause is having no periods for 12 consecutive months. Prior to that, ovarian failure causes irregular bleeding and missed periods. You could still get pregnant, be careful!

At the end...

QMy daughter is scared I’ll die (I’m in my 90s)! I’m worried she’ll whisk me into hospital if I’m sick and too ill to make choices. How can I avoid this – I don’t want any more interventions? Julia, Chester

ASpeak to your GP about advanced planning, end-of-life care and emergency care plans – and involve your daughter so she can hear what you want. It can formalise what you want for your future care.
