Get wed for dying mum..?

-

Sephy, 45 Aberdeen

I’ve been with my fiancé for the past six years, engaged for two, and his mum doesn’t have long left. She’s got six months at best, and her dying wish is for us to get married.

Although I don’t want to rush into it, my fiancé thinks that we should tie the knot.

I don’t feel ready to get wed, not that I don’t love him, but we can’t afford it and it’s not the right time – and he knows this!

But should I get married to make his mum happy?

After all, it’s just a day…

YES

Pick Me Up! reader Tanya Taylor says, ‘I’m sure you could get married within six months and look forward to it. You’re already committed anyway and your future plans are to marry him. If you don’t do it, and she passes away, you could end up carrying the regret for the rest of your life and have to live with an unhappy fiancé just because you never brought the wedding forward.’

NO

Pick Me Up! reader Lindsay Jane says, ‘Have you explained to her that you’re both not ready to get married? After all it’s your day, not hers. I do fully understand it’s her dying wish and that you’ll both miss her dearly when the time comes. However, I’m sure she’d rather you were happy than rushed into something you didn’t want. Plus, could you have the day you wanted in that time?’
