Spina bi­fida is a de­fect in which a baby’s spine and spinal cord don’t de­velop prop­erly in the womb, cre­at­ing a gap in the spine. The ex­act cause is un­known, but symp­toms in­clude leg paral­y­sis, loss of skin sen­sa­tion and in­con­ti­nence. It can also cause hy­dro­cephalus, or fluid on the brain. Treat­ments for spina bi­fida in­clude surgery and man­ag­ing ther­a­pies.
