Pick Me Up!

New habits

Q I’m 35 and for the first time in my life, I’ve developed little routines that I can’t shake. I have to check the front door three times – and my cupboards have to be arranged a certain way or I can’t sleep. What’s wrong with me? Karen, Hampshire A When we begin to behave in ways that you describe, it can be linked to levels of anxiety.

I wonder whether something has happened to you recently that is making you feel more anxious and stressed?

If you can identify things that are really upsetting you and that link to your increased anxiety, you will be better placed to start to address what is going on.

The less stressed, upset and anxious you are feeling, the less you are likely to need to have these routines in place as they are a way of you trying to feel more in control.

We can lower our own stress and anxiety levels through practices such as mindfulness, yoga, exercise, diet and getting enough sleep, but you may need some extra professional help.

I’d definitely recommend you see your GP if things don’t improve or get worse.
