Pick Me Up!

One in a MILLION!

This week we’re recognising the incredible kindness of Amanda Tinnion, 42, from County Durham. She said…

Settling down to an evening of homework, I got my thinking cap on. Being a mum to Charlie, 10, and Ella, seven, my nights would be hectic after a long day working for Virgin Media.

After 15 years in my full-time job, I found out that I was being made redundant in 2017.

I felt at a loose end. ‘There’s an event coming up and there will be a stall about fostering,’ I revealed to my partner James, 39.

We had always wanted more children and had frequent conversations about fostering.

And with one door closing for me, it felt like the perfect opportunity to open another.

Attending the event, we learnt about the process as well as the children that were looking for a home.

Seeing them smiling at the camera, I felt heartbroken, and I knew we had to help.

So, just a few months after registering with The Fostering Company, we received a letter.

Opening the envelope, me and James couldn’t believe it.

‘We are going to be foster parents,’ I cheered, hugging him tight.

And with that, working under the company’s umbrella, our doors were open to children that needed us.

Plus, I knew I wanted to take in sibling groups.

It’s common that siblings can’t be placed together as people do not have the space.

I couldn’t imagine the upset it would cause if Charlie and Ella had to be split up.

Opening our doors to two 15-month-old babies, we felt a rush of love.

Although it was a little difficult to get used to nappy changes again!

After 18 months, we welcomed another sibling group of three.

James also ended up leaving his job, which meant that we really could be the ultimate parenting team.

Charlie and Ella loved being a big brother and sister, too.

All of the children we have fostered have now moved on to different homes.

Saying goodbye is never easy, but we still have regular contact with them and it’s so rewarding to know that they are finally getting the love and comfort they deserve.

Seeing their personality and confidence change is also a pleasure.

I can see me and James fostering children forever now.

If anyone is thinking of fostering, I really couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

You don’t need to have any experience and your generosity really could go a long way.
