Choosing between my head and heart, I’d reached a turbulent time in my life. Hitting my late 30s, I’d had the most wonderful career in accountancy, but I’d got to the point where I wanted to try a new adventure before it was too late.

Living in the Highlands for my entire life, I loved the sense of community in Scotland.

Only, I wanted to do something I felt really passionate about, reimagining Scottish heritage, identity, and legacy in one place.

And looking at the fast fashion in my wardrobe, I’d come up with a solution. Tartan.

A fabric known from one massive battle in Scottish history, but this was the 21st century, and we had to change our fighting methods.

It was time to battle for the planet – creating an open, honest, and transparent fashion brand.

To keep up with the latest clothing trends, we have all wasted far too much fashion material.

We needed to go back to the past, purchasing items that could be customised, turned into something else in the future, and a garment that we knew everything about.

And using a traditional Scottish fabric just seemed like a match made in heaven.

I could make sustainable clothing with heritage at heart.

Ever since that crazy idea of starting my own business, Prickly Thistle, back in 2018, the last four years have been a journey that’s for sure.

The vision to bring back tartan weaving in the Highlands, whilst creating a community of fashion ‘rebels.’

I can now say that we have succeeded in that ambition.

We are the only tartan weaving mill in the Highlands and we have also been awarded a B Corp certificate – meaning that we have demonstrated we put the world first.

Making all of our clothing to order, we offer a four times a year service – so you can plan your purchases without shopping on impulse.

We’ve even set up a project to help various local schools, creating sustainable and, most importantly, free school uniforms for as many pupils as humanly possible.

Injecting Scottish heritage into their education!

We might not be the biggest brand out there but, from our little tartan mill, we are pining for huge changes to be made on this planet.

We can all be fashion rebels, clubbing together to help the environment – sporting the world’s finest tartan!
