How did you get into writing?

My father owned an independent production company in New Orleans, and I was influenced by many artists, including Tennessee Williams, who was a family friend and gave me writing advice. I also blame my hometown for my scribblings. You can’t walk the streets of the French Quarter without feeling inspired.

How are you using your background in sexual abuse in your writing?

I’m an advanced practice registered nurse and have worked with victims of sexual assault, abuse, and mental illness. My background gives me the ability to write authentic characters and situations. Educating readers through fiction brings needed attention to the plight of the victims.

What draws you to writing thrillers?

The psychologically imbalanced characters, the dark worlds, the sense of dread as you turn every page, and the pacing. The genre incorporates many storytelling elements, including suspense, horror, and even romance, but I revel in juggling multiple arcs and complex characters. Writing thrillers keeps me on my toes.

What do you hope your writing will achieve?

Creating a story that lives on in a reader’s mind long after they have closed the book is a goal, but if I make one person stop and think or re-evaluate a difficult relationship, I have fulfilled an inner wish. If you can change a perception, you can open a door.

What advice would you give sexual assault victims? Stay strong and speak out. You’ll supported by people who will listen and help. Remember, this happened to you. You did not let it happen. The louder victims get, the more we can do to stop perpetrators from hurting anyone else.
