GIVE IT A GO!
Here are Sam’s top three picks for a workout you might not have considered trying...
● Roller skating
Roller skating has had a resurgence in recent months as people realise that it’s a great low impact activity that comes with a wealth of health benefits.
There are classes available in more central locations or, if you’re feeling confident, you can invest in your own pair of skates and practise in the garden or local park to build up skill and endurance.
Additional benefits include improving cardiovascular fitness, improving lower body strength and stability and it burns lots of calories so can be beneficial for fat loss, too.
However, roller skating isn’t without risk and can be dangerous for novices as there is a chance of falling so ensure you wear the appropriate safety equipment.
● Dance classes
Fitness classes don’t have to be weights, cycling or running. Dance classes are becoming increasingly popular with many types of dances on offer including street, hip hop, salsa, Zumba, aqua, jazzercize – with the majority being available in person or virtually.
Class types will vary dependent on location, but they are all a great way to get a sweat on, improve fitness, improve coordination, have fun and burn lots of calories – all whilst trying something new.
Pick your favourite dance style and have a look for free classes or groups in your area.
● Wild swimming
Outdoor and sea swimming has increased in popularity over the past few years and, with cold water therapy boasting many health benefits, more people are turning to outdoor swimming for regular free exercise.
This is slightly less accessible as it depends on your location, but if you’re able to travel it’s a cheap and easy way to exercise – just make sure you do it safely! Swimming is a great way of improving cardiovascular fitness, muscular endurance and gaining a lean, toned physique. Swimming is also a great way of burning lots of calories to lose body fat as well.
Alongside the many benefits of swimming, outdoor swimming in particular also gives the benefits of cold water therapy, including inflammation reduction, boosting the immune system and improving mental health and wellbeing, too.
For those who prefer the comfort of the indoors, you can still reap the health benefits of swimming by visiting your local swimming pool or joining a gym that offers this service.
