psychotherapist and founder of DBT London, goes on to explain.

‘The urge stems from a basic instinct to remove perceived imperfections or threats from our bodies.

‘For some, pimple popping can become addictive. The immediate sense of relief and satisfaction triggers the release of dopamine.

‘Over time, the brain may start seeking this dopamine rush, leading to a cycle where pimple popping becomes a compulsive behaviour.

‘And while occasional pimple popping can be very common, excessive skin picking can indicate a serious condition known as dermatillomania.

‘This condition involves repetitive picking at one’s skin, causing damage and is often linked to anxiety, depression or OCD,’ Jason adds.

So even though some of us may take it to the extreme, is there a safe way to pop spots, if we really cannot resist the urge to do so?

‘If you’re determined to extract a pimple, there are some tips to minimise chances of scarring and infection,’ Dr Olha Vorodukhina, aesthetics trainer and founder of Angels Twelve Clinic reveals.

‘First, wash your hands with soap and apply antiseptic. Cleanse your skin and then steam with a warm towel to help open the pores.

‘Use sterile tools such as a blackhead extractor. But make sure not to squeeze too hard – apply gentle pressure until the spot comes out. ‘Cleanse the skin with witch hazel and then apply spot treatment,’ Dr Olha advises.

And then, when it comes to keeping spots at bay, there is plenty that you can do in terms of upping your daily skincare routine, too.

‘Keeping skin gently cleaned twice a day, both morning and evening, is important, so you can prevent the plugs from

‘Your skin naturally secretes toxins and eliminates waste every day, so if you fall sleep before you’ve cleansed, you’re letting the bacteria breed, build and feed all night long.

‘Look at your diet, lower the sugar levels and avoid extremes of heat where you may perspire more.

‘Your skin is the largest living organ of the body, all you need to do is take care of it, show it some TLC and gently cleanse, cleanse and cleanse again!’

So, the next time you decide to stare at your face in the mirror, it may be wise to keep your hands to yourself.

There’s no need to pick and dig at your skin.

By doing so, you could actually cause deep-routed problems by doing so.

And if you must pop your spots, try to go lightly – don’t

forget to cleanse your skin regularly, too.

Not only that, but if you really need to scratch the itch, stick to watching Dr Pimple Popper videos online.

That way, you can fuel the addiction without causing any more harm.

And those pus explosions can fill your screen instead of the mirror...
