Rhinebeck’s ‘Flying farmer’ dies aged 91

Pilot - - NOTES -

American airshow pilot Stan Segalla, best known for his ‘Flying farmer’ comedy routine has died. He was a star attraction at Old Rhinebeck in upstate New York for many years, retiring in 2008. In his routine he would ‘steal’ his own Piper PA-11 Cub Special and perform a low-level show that, as one tribute aptly put it, ‘seemed to defy the laws of physics, or at least common sense’. He also performed in the collection’s Avro 504K as ‘OneShot Gatling’.

Old Rhinebeck’s website paid tribute: ‘A pilot’s pilot, Stan elevated everyone around him with his experience and skill at the controls of anything he flew... always the life of any gathering or conversation. His antics within the crowd each Sunday are legendary, interacting with young and old, weaving a tale and telling jokes… creating and relishing the chaos that ensued.’
