3Rs Air racing update
In the event, only seventeen aircraft took off, as one racer’s brake caught fire on the runway but was swiftly dealt with by the fire crew and moved out of the way so the race could go ahead just ten minutes late. After just over 100nm over three laps, first to finish was Roderick Morton in his Lake Amphibian. But thanks to the handicapping system, Roderick actually came fifth and Haverfordwestresident Bob Ellis (2015 British & European Air Racing Champion) was declared the winner of the Gower Cup in his homebuilt Van’s RV8.
Sadly, the weather did not hold and rain forced the cancellation of Sunday’s Goodyear Trophy race, with several aircraft remaining in the hangar as racers made their way home by other means or stayed on to fly out on Monday. Next races are at Compton Abbas on 9/10 July. PPL/NPPL/LAPL licence holder aged under 35, to help them transition from typical flying club nosewheel designs to older tailwheel types, potentially opening the door to flying a wider range of vintage and classic types.
