I’d like to men­tion briefly the kind­ness of the peo­ple we met in Nome and the na­ture and his­tory of the town. Nome is a gold rush town thanks to just three lucky Swedish peo­ple who found gold in 1898; a cou­ple of years later there were 20,000 prospec­tors. The town hasn’t changed that much in 100 years ex­cept for the ar­rival of a cin­ema and a Sub­way fast food restau­rant that gave me free food as I went there so of­ten. The li­brary peo­ple let me steal their wifi, and the lady in the gym let me shower there be­cause we were camp­ing out, the ho­tel be­ing $250 a night. I need to thank the Raven Air me­chan­ics, who lent tools and their hangar to al­low me to mod­ify the en­gine cowls to fit the new en­gine bet­ter and to de­velop the in­flight re­fu­elling sys­tem.
