Piston engine decline

Pilot - - PILOT NOTES -

The US FAA’S twenty-year forecast for general aviation predicts an annual rise of 0.1% in active fleet size, for a total increase of 3,400 aircraft between 2017-2037. Continued growth is expected in the turbine and rotorcraft fleets, but the number of fixed-wing piston-engined fleet is predicted to shrink over the forecast period by 22,500 aircraft. Although overall fleet growth is minimal, the number of general aviation hours flown is forecast to increase by an average of 0.9% per year through 2037, as growth in turbine, rotorcraft, and experimental hours more than offsets a decline in fixed-wing piston engined operations.
