Little and large
Over 50,000 people streamed through the gates to attend the RAF Cosford Air Show on Sunday 11 June, while 36 miles due west at Welshpool Airport in mid-wales a much smaller crowd was arriving for the annual Bob Jones Memorial Airshow. Despite a strong wind and some rain showers both airshows presented an excellent mix of participants, with several appearing at both locations. The much smaller eleven-item family airshow at Welshpool, like Cosford, lost its headline Sea Vixen, but the replacement Bronco flown by Tony de Bruyn gave an outstanding display, as did Lauren Richardson in her Pitts S1S and Will Greenwood in his YAK-3UA. Crazy flying by Bob Pooler in the Aviat Husky, Pete Davies performing an extraordinary sequence in his Calidus and the ‘Old Bückers’ Jungmeister and Jungmann pair from Sleap were all notable crowd-pleasers. The SAR demonstration by Andy Whitehouse in the yellow Whirlwind HAR10 fitted well into the compact Welsh airfield. The Red Arrows managed its scheduled flypast but the BBMF’S Spitfires were beaten by the weather. www.welshpoolairport.co.uk
On a much bigger scale, the six-hour international flying display at RAF Cosford with its rare appearances by a USAF B-1B Lancer and B-52H Stratofortress, this season’s first formation display by a quartet of BBMF fighters (three Spitfires and a Hurricane), return of B-17 Flying Fortress Sally B, debut of the Strikemaster and Jet Provost pair, Bell UH-1H Huey and Hughes OH-6A, catered for a wide range of aviation interests. The Hartree Memorial Trophy, for the best flying display was given to the Swiss PC-7 Team for its immaculately flown formation display while the Italian AF Tornado received an award for its stunning paint scheme. Being the home of No 1 School of Technical Training there was an abundance of Jaguars and other retired front-line aircraft on static display and the RAF Museum added Typhoon forerunner the BAE EAP and Hurricane IIC LF738 to the extensive line-up. As the only airshow provided by the RAF at one of its bases this year it was deemed a great success on all counts. www.cosfordairshow.co.uk
