Leonardo AW169S for Nor­way, New York

The Nor­we­gian Po­lice Di­rec­torate has or­dered three Leonardo AW169S, with options on a fur­ther three, for its he­li­copter ser­vice mod­erni­sa­tion pro­gramme. The con­tract in­cludes a ten-year main­te­nance pack­age. ‘The new air­craft will en­able the Nor­we­gian Po­lice to en­hance their ca­pa­bil­i­ties and readi­ness to counter var­i­ous threats such as ter­ror­ism and other crimes, de­liv­er­ing greater range than the cur­rent he­li­copters in ser­vice and rapid re­sponse over shorter ranges from other bases when nec­es­sary,’ says Leonardo. The AW169S, which will be equipped with six seats in ad­di­tion to the flight crew, will per­form a range of tasks in­clud­ing ob­ser­va­tion, sur­veil­lance, spe­cial op­er­a­tions team trans­port and air­borne snip­ing. Some 160 AW169S are on or­der from seventy cus­tomers in thirty coun­tries, of which thirty have been de­liv­ered.

Leonardo’s AW119KX has been se­lected by the New York City De­part­ment of En­vi­ron­men­tal Pro­tec­tion Po­lice for op­er­a­tions in sup­port of wa­ter sup­ply pro­tec­tion. De­liv­ery is sched­uled for 2018. As the largest sin­gle source wa­ter sup­ply in the United States, the New York City wa­ter sup­ply sys­tem is pro­tected by ground and air to pre­vent ter­ror­ism, pol­lu­tion and crime. The he­li­copter will be equipped with a search­light, FLIR, ex­ter­nal loud­speak­ers, rap­pelling and cargo hooks, ex­panded fuel sys­tem, a fold­able stretcher, and high vis­i­bil­ity crew doors, and will have pro­vi­sion for a ‘Bambi Bucket’ for fire­fight­ing op­er­a­tions.
