Leonardo AW169S for Norway, New York
The Norwegian Police Directorate has ordered three Leonardo AW169S, with options on a further three, for its helicopter service modernisation programme. The contract includes a ten-year maintenance package. ‘The new aircraft will enable the Norwegian Police to enhance their capabilities and readiness to counter various threats such as terrorism and other crimes, delivering greater range than the current helicopters in service and rapid response over shorter ranges from other bases when necessary,’ says Leonardo. The AW169S, which will be equipped with six seats in addition to the flight crew, will perform a range of tasks including observation, surveillance, special operations team transport and airborne sniping. Some 160 AW169S are on order from seventy customers in thirty countries, of which thirty have been delivered.
Leonardo’s AW119KX has been selected by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection Police for operations in support of water supply protection. Delivery is scheduled for 2018. As the largest single source water supply in the United States, the New York City water supply system is protected by ground and air to prevent terrorism, pollution and crime. The helicopter will be equipped with a searchlight, FLIR, external loudspeakers, rappelling and cargo hooks, expanded fuel system, a foldable stretcher, and high visibility crew doors, and will have provision for a ‘Bambi Bucket’ for firefighting operations.
With 160 on order, the AW169 is proving popular for many duties
