Out in the cold
Basic UK military flying training will be undertaken in Grob 120TP Prefects such as G-CKCO, which may superficially resemble the Grob 115 Tutor it supersedes but is a turboprop of composite construction with all-digital instrumentation. Historically, as with the Tiger Moth, Chipmunk and Bulldog, such a step-change brings a flood of well-maintained trainers on to the civilian and second-hand market. The Finnish Air Force has used the forty-year old indigenous Valmet Vinka for initial training but has now contracted Babcock International to supply 28 EX-RAF Tutors and the instruction and maintenance to go with them. The first batch delivered includes G-BYUG.
