RAEC 3Rs air race results

Pilot - - PILOT NOTES -

The two air races held at Beccles airfield in Suffolk over 2-3 September were the last of the 2017 season (as Alderney unfortunately had to be cancelled). Pilots therefore not only contested the Airborne and Merlin trophies but the race results also decided the outcome of the 2017 British and European Air Race Championships.

Saturday’s race was won by Dominic Crossan with navigator Guy Hook in Dom’s Van’s RV-6, with Matt Summers and navigator Sean Roberson second in a Van’s RV-8, and Dave Moorman third flying solo in his CAP 10B. On Sunday, the Merlin Trophy — normally a precursor to the Schneider Trophy which was to have been run at Alderney — was won by Matt and Sean, with Ian Harding a solo second in his RV-4, and Geoffrey Boot and his navigator wife Suzie third in a SIAIMarchetti SF.260W.

When all the complicated sums had been done (pilots can drop some of their least favourable results), the winners of both the British and European Air Race Championships 2017 were declared to be Dominic Crossan and Guy Hook, crowning a season of precise and consistent flying.

The Beccles races also introduced disabled pilot David Keene to air racing in his specially adapted Scottish Aviation Bulldog 121. David loved the experience and plans to race again in 2018. Anyone interested in taking up this exciting sport should go to www.royalaeroclubrrra.co.uk.
