Bristows crew honoured by Sikorsky

Sikorsky has presented Bristow Helicopters with its Winged-s Rescue Award in recognition of a life-saving mission in the North Atlantic last May when a SAR Bristows S-92 operating out of HM Coastguard’s Prestwick base saved surfer Matthew Bryce, who had been stranded at sea for 32 hours. Bryce had set out from the west coast of Scotland for a day’s surfing, but did not return. After an extensive air and sea search, he was found by the crew of S-92 ‘Rescue 999’ drifting off the coast of Northern Ireland, and was airlifted to a Belfast hospital.

Established in 1950, the Winged-s Rescue Award honours those who perform rescues while flying Sikorsky helicopters, ‘acknowledging the humanitarian efforts of pilots and crewmembers who put themselves in harm’s way to save others, thus fulfilling Igor Sikorsky’s vision of the helicopter’.
