Sikorsky has been contracted by the County of Los Angeles to supply two S-70is that will be converted to Firehawk configuration after delivery in December. A specialist outfitter will install 1,000 US gallon water tanks, extended landing gear, single pilot cockpit layouts and medevac interiors before they join the LA County Fire Department’s current fleet of three Firehawks. Thomas Ewald, assistant fire chief of LA County’s Air and Wildland Division, said: “The Firehawk has repeatedly proven its reliability and ruggedness. The stresses we place on the aircraft when we take on and then aggressively release 8,000 pounds of water multiple times a day are far more than what its military variant might do in normal operations at maximum gross weight. Like a good pickup truck, we beat it up and it keeps coming back for more!”
