New models, flying/testing prototypes and bidding to replace the Huey

At October’s Helitech show in London Leonardo introduced the AW189K, which is powered by Safran Helicopter Engines’ 2,500shp-class Aneto-1k engines, and will be the first helicopter on the market with these new-generation powerplants.

An AW189K prototype first flew at Leonardo’s Cascina Costa plant in Italy on 9 March and has so far demonstrated very good performance capabilities in demanding weight, altitude and temperature conditions, and - according to Gian Piero Cutillo, Leonardo Helicopters’ Managing Director - excellent Performance Class 1 capabilities for offshore operations are also expected.

“We are pleased that the AW189K will be the first helicopter to feature an Aneto engine,’ he said. “This new turboshaft engine will offer our customers a high level of performance and further extend the capabilities and versatility of our super-medium platform, particularly in hot-and-high conditions. Operators will also benefit from Safran’s longstanding experience in the helicopter market, as well as from its strong worldwide support network. The AW189K’S increased performance capabilities in hot-and-high conditions makes it ideal for various customer requirements across a range of geographies, and allows to better leverage the versatility of the super medium platform, not just for long-range offshore transport or SAR, but also for VIP transport, firefighting and various parapublic duties.”

EASA type certification of the AW189K is expected in the fourth quarter of 2018. Leonardo holds orders and options for more than 150 AW189S. Thirty already in service worldwide have logged 25,000plus flight hours.
