Moths drawn to new venue
After several years holding its annual Gathering of Moths at the Shuttleworth Trust, Old Warden, the de Havilland Moth Club (DHMC) has had to find a new venue for the 2018 event. “The club had reached agreement with the Shuttleworth Collection for the 2018 Gathering to be held again at Old Warden on 29 July,” says DHMC Founder and Secretary Stuart Mckay, “but late in 2017 a major airshow changed the published date of its 2018 event to that day, and as Old Warden Air Traffic Services were contracted to that show, a new date was negotiated, confirmed with Shuttleworth, and widely circulated.
“However, in February Shuttleworth unexpectedly advised the DHMC that there was a major event taking place in Old Warden Park on the same day and although this would not impinge on activities on the aerodrome, from past experience the local traffic situation was likely to become gridlocked. Additional traffic generated by the Gathering would be most unwelcome by all concerned and, to save frayed tempers and much besides, there was little alternative to a change of date. Having changed the date once already, the club was not willing to change again, in addition to which none of the dates offered by Old Warden as an alternative were suitable.
“Thus… it was preferable to move location rather than date, (so) we shall be Gathering the Moths at RAF Henlow on Sunday 12 August. The new venue is an active RAF station, a military facility with all that that implies, including security checks on all movements of visiting personnel, so it will not be open to the public, but restricted to DHMC members and their guests, and invited friends from the vintage car world. Anybody arriving by surface who does not have a Henlow security pass already will need to apply to the club in advance for an entry permit. A DHMC membership card will not be sufficient on the day.” For more details visit: dhmothclub.co.uk
