I was intrigued by Andrew Freeman's complaint about the £312 landing charges at Blackbushe and went to their website to check the fees. The £156 listed only applies to aircraft with a MTOW 3,501-4,500kg, not the 2,500kg as stated; the current landing fee for an aircraft with MTOW 2,501-3,500kg is £96. The other clear difference is that included in the price for aircraft over 2,500 MTOW are the handling charges, including use of the crew and passenger lounge facilities. These all come with an additional £60 charge for aircraft under 2,500 MTOW.
Everything in aviation is about due diligence and pre-planning. Not checking the landing fee and then complaining is not a valid basis for people not to fly there. On the other hand, if the PA-31 is within the 2,501-3,500 category then maybe Andrew should ask for a refund. I’m only aware of the PA-31P being over the 3,500 MTOW, and flying around in a pressurised twin is a dream for most of us GA pilots.
I’ve never flown at, nor am I associated with Blackbushe. But suggesting that the general GA pilot, who is unlikely to have to pay more than the £28.80 landing fee (751–1,500kg MTOW) should boycott this airfield is a rather large exaggeration! 'Tim'
