First quarter Airspace Infringements

Pilot - - SAFETY MATTERS -

The CAA reports that there was a total of 227 Airspace Infringements in the first three months of 2019: 79 infringements of CTAS, including Airways; 60 infringements of TMAS, 45 of CTRS, 16 of ATZS, nine of Restricted/prohibited/danger Areas, 12 of TMZS, and six of RMZS.

Analysis by three experienced GA pilots of the 1,162 infringements recorded in 2017 identified four key measures that could have helped prevent the infringement or reduced its impact on other air traffic or controllers:

Use of moving maps with an airspace warning.

Use of a frequency monitoring code (FMC or ‘listening squawk’).

Recognition of/dealing with overload and distraction.

Better familiarity with aircraft and equipment. Full details can be found at: airspacesafety.com/factsstats-and-incidents/?mc_ cid=852befccb5&mc_eid=da8a4b51ad
