The US manufacturer of gasoline engines has also set foot in the diesel world. The origin of its liquid-cooled, four-cylinder, inline DEL-120 200hp is a converted automotive diesel engine from the Fiat Group. The original engine was heavily modified for aviation use and drives the propeller via a reduction gear. It is installed in the ‘Improved Gray Eagle’ from General Atomics in the Predator UAV series. Originally, this UAV was equipped with a Thielert Diesel engine. The DEL-20 could also gain FAA approval for use in certified aircraft should there be sufficient demand from aircraft manufacturers, says Lycoming Senior Vice President and General Manager Michael Kraft. www.lycoming.com/engines/ del-120
