2019 Nick Davidson Memorial Flying Scholarship
Joshua Ali has been awarded London Biggin Hill Airport’s 2019 Nick Davidson Memorial Flying Scholarship (NDMFS). Twenty-two-year-old Joshua, from Lewisham in South London, will receive training to PPL standard worth £12,000, including 45 hours of flying with EFG Flying School, ground school and examinations. He will work at EFG’S operations desk as he completes his flight training.
“We couldn’t be prouder of Joshua,” says Trust Chairman Captain Gary Merchant. “Our scholarships are not for the faint-hearted or the illprepared [and their] stamp of high attainment will continue to provide inspiration and leadership for young men and women seeking worthwhile careers on the flight deck or in the cockpit.”
Joshua’s desire to become a pilot started from a young age, when he took part in flying days, gliding lessons and airfield visits. During studies at the University of Reading he spent a year on detachment in Australia, flying regularly with Melbourne Gliding Club. “I am so grateful to the NDMFS scheme and to London Biggin Hill Airport for this amazing opportunity,” he says. “I can’t wait to learn modern aviation skills and work towards my goal of becoming a commercial airline pilot. It’s like a dream come true.”
The Scholarship was established in 2012 following the death of Airbus Captain and local pilot Nick Davidson, who worked as a flying instructor at Biggin Hill in the early 1990s. The scheme is supported by his widow Alina and co-sponsors London Biggin Hill Airport, Shipping & Airlines, Adams Aviation Supply Company, Pooley’s Flight Equipment and Falcon Flying Services, which owns the EFG Flying School. Applications are now open for the 2020 Scholarship. Applicants must be aged between 16 and 26. Entries close on 30 November.
