Chipmunk first solo

Pilot - - NOTES -

Steven Burnside made his first solo in DHC-1 Chipmunk G-CGAO from Fenland on Thursday 17 October. Steve has been learning to fly with Fenland Flying School under the tutelage of his best friend, David Petters. Steve said “It’s a real privilege to be able to do my PPL in such a great aircraft. I feel very lucky to have such an opportunity.”

It is quite unusual to obtain a PPL on a Chipmunk these days, and adds a degree of difficulty, as the student has to master the three-point and wheeler landings, and other characteristics of a taildragger.

G-CGAO is a Portuguese built OGMA Chipmunk of 1958 vintage. It is well known on the display scene in David’s hands as part of the Vintage Pair and Four Chip formation teams.
