Smooth lighting at Sleap

Pilot - - NOTES -

Pilots at Sleap airfield are benefiting from a new lighting fit by Smooth Aviation. A fresh entrant to the runway lighting market, Smooth installed LED lights on Runway 18/36, making Sleap a dual lit operation, conventional lighting already being in place on Runway 23/05. With 18/36 Notam’d closed, 2.5km of trenches were dug to lay cables, and the work was completed in time for the beginning of the night flying season.

Smooth Aviation says the lighting at Sleap – 24 edge lights, ten taxi lights and twenty threshold lights – uses in total around a third of the energy of an electric kettle, equating to much lower running costs, but is bright enough for day use too.

Airfield Manager Nathan Cross said “The winter wind direction was found to regularly favour the out of use runway, leaving aviators frustrated at cancelled flights and night lessons. Shropshire Aero Club Ltd partnered Smooth Aviation on the project [and] the professional finish is testament to the careful planning and consultation by Smooth Aviation. I am most impressed with the standard and reliability of the installation, Shropshire Aero Club looks forward to a busy winter period at Sleap Aerodrome”. www.smoothaviation.com
