Birmingham set to stick with trusted formula
HORNDEAN are sticking with their tried and trusted formula as they head for Portland United in their bid to reach the final of the Wessex League Cup tonight (7.45pm).
In the earlier rounds the Deans have fielded a mixed squad led by reserve manager Paul Marsh.
And first-team boss Michael Birmingham sees no reason to change that for the semi-final.
'We have already beaten Lymington and Bournemouth Poppies with our mix of reserve and fringe players,' said Birmingham.
'They have been phenomenal and deserve the chance to continue.
‘It is never easy having to travel so far for a midweek fixture.
'With all the roadworks at Bournemouth it means we will have to leave at 3.30 in the afternoon.
'That is crazy because all the players have work commitments. It is a big ask.
'We asked the league if the game could be changed to a Saturday but they refused.
'It will be a great achievement if we can reach the final.'
Fareham Town host Bemerton Heath Harlequins at Cams Alders in the Wessex premier knowing a win could virtually make them safe.
'This is a big game for us,' said Stiles.
'If we win then it will open up a 10-point gap between us and our opponents with six games to go.
'We are on a seven game unbeaten run but five of them have been draws.
'This has held us back because we could easily be at least six points better off.’
Baffins Milton Rovers travel to Alresford Town aiming to consolidate their top six spot.
Steve Leigh's side will be buoyed following a 3-0 win against Portland United.
AFC Portchester are expecting a testing encounter away to Brockenhurst.
Division One US Portsmouth entertain bottom-of-the-table Totton & Eling.
