THE use of fossil fuels raises serious environmen­tal concerns by releasing up to 21.3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. Pupils at St Edmund’s Catholic School are concerned for the planet’s future due to global warming.

Fossil fuels take millions of years to produce, sometimes exceeding six hundred and fifty million years. Once they’re gone, they’re gone forever.

On the other hand we are finding ways to change – for example electric cars and recycling. Inventions and ideas like these are essential, and things are starting to change for the better. We can contribute to that too.

‘The easiest way we can help is to ‘live simply!’, said Mr Nicol, a teacher at St Edmund’s Catholic School in Portsmouth.

According to Miss Hooker, a science teacher in St Edmund’s: ‘There are alternativ­es in terms of things like packaging. We can use things that are recyclable like straw and paper.’

We can all do our bit every day, like buying less, signing campaigns, recycling, spend less time in the shower and don’t leave things charging overnight.

In other words, live simply.
