MEMBERS of the public are being asked to nominate their hospital heroes as an annual awards ceremony gears up to make its 2019 return.

The Patient’s Choice Award will be one of 10 prizes up for grabs at the Pride of Portsmouth Awards on November 18.

Organised by Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Queen Alexandra Hospital, the ceremony at Portsmouth Guildhall will recognise the work and achievements of employees and whole teams across the organisation.

Consultant respiratory physician Dr Suresh Babu clinched the public prize last year after being nominated by Wendy Woodage, an administration manager on QA’s respiratory department.

She said she has owed her life to Dr Babu on three occasions, after he discovered she had liver cancer in 2015, a tumour in her heart and litres of fluid on her lungs last year.

And Mark Cubbon, CEO of Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said now is the time to recognise others across the hospital community who have gone the extra mile to give patients the gold standard of care, like Dr Babu.

‘The Pride of Portsmouth Awards are a fantastic opportunity for us to recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements of our colleagues and teams right across the trust,’ he said.

‘I invite anyone who has received exceptional care at the trust to consider putting forward a nomination for the Patient’s Choice Award.

‘If you are a relative or carer of someone who has received excellent quality of care, or have been shown outstanding compassion, we would also like to hear from you.’

As reported, Wendy hailed Dr Babu’s ‘priceless’ patient care when she previously cast her vote for the Patient’s Choice Award – branding him an ‘incredibly hard-working doctor’.

She told The News: ‘There are so many people at the hospital that I could have nominated for their amazing care as well, but QA Hospital are very lucky to have such a caring doctor, he has been amazing with my family too.’

Entries for the prize are now open until Wednesday, July 31 and you can cast your vote online or by filling in and sending the nomination form beneath this story.

At last year’s event, winners were plucked from other categories including Best Volunteer, Best Apprentice, Best Improvement and Best Fundraiser.
