THEY SAID IT...

What a wonderful celebration and arrangement by our city for the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. From the beginning to the end, it was perfection.

A sincere thank you to all those involved on that day. God bless and thank you to the veterans who never came back home. They will live in our hearts forever.

My great grandson Alfie, aged 12, was in Southsea the next day with the Royal Marines Band.

They were followed by 12 men carrying the flagpoles and the Royal Marine cadets aged 10 to 17 years.

Lastly, they were followed by the veterans – the first ones in wheelchairs. I am a very proud great-grandmother.

Regarding D-Day, coming out of the shelters under Portsdown Hill with my mum and three younger sisters, across a stretch of path to go home two roads away, I can clearly remember someone saying ‘It’s D-Day’.

Of course I did not know what it was about as I was only 14.5 years old.

My father was away at sea on the K.G.V. ship, and two uncles were away serving in the Army and Royal Navy, and my husbandto-be (five years later) was away in the Army.

I did a small contribution in the war, with my sister Rene Young and my friend Beryl Dawn. Because our beds were downstairs in the war, I arranged a concert party in our large front bedroom charging friends to come in.

I have a photostat copy of a letter from 10 Downing Street, thanking us for the gift of money we sent, signed by Clementine S Churchill.

I remember the amount of money was three shillings and four pence, 15p – a lot of money in those days.

The News has been my paper for 70 years, so it’s a huge thank you to the editor and his team of photographers and reporters for the coverage of this never-to-be-forgotten event. Crofton Road, Purbrook
