Campaigners take message to royals at Cowes

-

CAMPAIGNERS will be hoping to brush shoulders with royalty in the coming week, as they continue to spread the antiplastic message.

The Final Straw Solent team has a fish sculpture bin, made from scrap metal by Sailboat Trailers, which is used as an anti-waste tool.

Today, the fish is making a journey over to the Isle of Wight for Cowes week, where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been spotted out on the water.

Lizzie Pollard, from The Final Straw Solent, said: ‘Our Final Fat Fish is on his way to the Isle of Wight and will be spending the week in the beer tent.

‘The idea here is that we’ll be able to promote sustainability and to showcase just how much rubbish is being thrown away in one tent over the course of a week.’

Both plastic bottles and the aluminium cans passed over the bar can be fed into the fish through its mouth, with guests able to see exactly how much waste has built up inside.

The Final Straw Solent campaigners met with the organisers of Cowes Week last year, in a bit to highlight just how much plastic waste can be generated at a week-long event.

Lizzie explained: ‘Since speaking to them, they switched to a deposit return scheme for cups; that way, instead of them being thrown away, people were able to keep on using the same cup and either get their money back for returning it, or keep it at the end of the week.

‘Schemes like this are really important because they can really clamp down on the number of plastics being used at an event.

‘Getting a picture of the royals with our fish would be incredible.’
