Royal Marines band dazzles youngsters in special concert night

-

THE world-famous Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Collingwood was given a helping hand in a recent concert – by children from service families.

Offspring of service personnel were invited to play alongside the Royal Marines Band, which wanted their latest concert to unite them and their audience in a unique way and to let the children become an integral part of the show.

Youngsters clapped, danced and sang their way through tunes from The Incredibles, Lion King and The Greatest Showman, with others actually joining the band on stage.

Harry Naughton, the bandmaster’s son, sang a splendid rendition of Beyond the Sea, while young cadet Michael Horn impressed everyone with his flawless static drum routine, playing with the band’s famous Corps of Drums.

After the concert, the fun moved outside when the audience marched out to The Bare Necessities behind the Corps of Drums.

Musician Charlene Walker said: ‘We like to put these concerts on as a ‘thank you’ to our families.

‘Quite often we have to work away or work unsociable hours which can put a strain on our families.

‘These concerts are a little way for us to be able to say thank you and let them know that without their support we couldn’t be the Band Service that we are.

‘Hearing people talk about it afterwards confirmed that this concert was a great success and some were even asking when they can come back again so we’re looking forward to doing it all again next year.’

Back in June, the band performed in front of Her Majesty The Queen as part of Portsmouth’s D-Day 75 commemorations.

The Royal Marines Band Collingwood’s next public concert is on September 15 at Ferneham Hall in Fareham, and will have a Last Night At The Proms theme. Tickets are on sale at fernehamhall.co.uk.
