Big Brother is watching you, so don’t forget to go see 1984
This spectacular production of 1984 brings together young people from across the region who have undertaken an intensive 10-day rehearsal period to bring the story to life.
Liam says: ‘The story of 1984 is one which has so many parallels with how our society has developed throughout the decades since its initial publication 70 years ago.
‘Orwell’s discussions on surveillance, fear and the exerting of power through the distorting of reality feel particularly pertinent given the current climate we find ourselves living in.
‘In our production we are particularly excited at exploring how advancements in technology have led to us enabling closer scrutiny and surveillance of our private lives by those in power.
‘This is something we as a society are enabling through the increased use of smart phones and smart speakers in our day-to-day lives, meaning that it is becoming increasingly more difficult for us to be left with our own thoughts, a frightening similarity to the function of the telescreens in 1984. ‘The Nuffield Southampton Youth Theatre team are greatly looking forward to working with both long-standing and new youth theatre members on this production, many of whom will be introduced to this classic text for the first time. Bringing together young people from across the region to work together provides us with an exciting opportunity to showcase the wealth of theatrical talent which is on our door step. ‘Mixing this with our highly-experienced designers, our outstanding technical team and the state-of-the-art facilities at NST City, this promises to be a production not to be missed.’ The Youth Theatre meet weekly at NST City and offer young people aged 13-25 a fast moving, supportive environment in which to learn and develop theatre and drama skills.
