Letting go of all that tension

‘It’s great for those with busy, stressful lives’ – Sharon’s eager to spread the word about restorative yoga benefits

-

SUFFERERS of serious illnesses can have their symptoms relieved through yoga – thanks to a new business.

Sharon Greentree, from Southsea, has set up Greentree Yoga, which uses restorative yoga to help ease the symptoms of serious illnesses and stress.

Sharon, who has been teaching Hatha yoga since 2004, qualified in the new branch of yoga last year after deciding that the traditional forms of yoga were taking a toll on her body as she got older.

She began restorative yoga because of its relaxing and easy nature, which put less of a strain on her while teaching it, as well as its healing nature and the fact that it could help people.

Although it is not widely known about in the city, Sharon hopes that more people will learn about it and try it out.

She said: ‘I feel it’s really important for people to get to know about it.

‘It is important to be aware of all aspects of yoga, so I like to teach some yoga philosophies within the class that can lead to a theme throughout.

‘This practice is fantastic for helping to reprogram the nervous system, supporting you to let go of deeply held tension in the body and mind and to support better sleep, so it’s great for those with busy, stressful lives.’

It is different because it uses ‘props’ such as foam blocks, blankets and bags, rather than muscles, to hold the body up, making it more accessible for people of all abilities.

Sharon, who has a diploma in mindfulness meditation, offers one-to-one sessions to her clients around the city, as well as weekly and monthly group classes.

The unique yoga techniques help sufferers of high blood pressure, insomnia, stress, fibromyalgia and ME, as well as people who are recovering from serious illnesses such as cancer.

She also offers sessions for children with cystic fibrosis to help correct their posture and manage their breathing, as well as school pupils to encourage them to manage their exam stress.

Each session is tailored to the needs of her clients.
