Those of us who want to remain in the EU must act decisively

- Ray Pettitt Frensham Road, Southsea

We are at a crossroads, a catastrophic no deal looms on the horizon and those of us who want to remain in the EU must act decisively.

We must unite behind one candidate at the next general election, whenever that may be, and we must put party-political allegiances to one side to fend off this most dangerous of threats – a no deal Brexit.

Like Mr Johnson, Donna Jones possesses an ill-thought out and reckless ‘do or die’ attitude to Brexit that may be successful in consolidating the right wing of Portsmouth’s political spectrum, sucking in the Brexit votes.

This means that we cannot afford to split the remain vote in our city.

We must be united behind one proven representative in parliament who both backs a public vote and option to remain, and has been consistent in their stance.

This leaves only one candidate, elected MP Stephen Morgan (pictured).

Across this country, Liberal Democrats are reaching sensible agreements with other parties where the party is footing a remain candidate.

Why is it that Gerald Vernon-Jackson is blindly putting his ego ahead of city and country by refusing to do the same?

The Liberals proudly boasted about their new candidate for the north of the city, but in the south? No fanfare at all. Perhaps they’re ashamed of Mr Vernon-Jackson putting his career before our city?

I have been following Morgan’s activity in the constituency and in parliament for some time and his support for a final say and with a commitment to an option for remain has been unwavering, even before it was party policy.

At the next election, I am a firm believer that we Remainers should back the candidate and the party who has the best chance of securing the result we all need – ruling out no deal and achieving a final say.

As the dreaded result of no deal looms ever closer and is now ‘more likely than ever’ according to Michael Gove, this is not the time for division and narcissistic campaigns. We must unite and get behind a proven winner.

Stephen Morgan has proven himself to be trusted. Now we must put our faith in him to steer us through these trying times.
