Blues’ green ambitions should help the cause
The single-use plastic debate has gathered much momentum over the past few years having been put in the spotlight by television presenter and environmentalist Sir David Attenborough and his Blue
Planet series on television. My, have we come a long way since then.
He planted the seed firmly in people’s heads about the damage plastic was causing to animals that inhabit the oceans and the devastating affect that has been having on our planet.
Indeed, the whole subject of eco-friendly issues seemed to spiral out of the plastic debate and individuals and the country as a whole has embraced greener ways of living.
The many initiatives haven’t escaped us here in Portsmouth or the south.
The Final Straw Solent campaign, run in association with The News, was formed and does sterling work in the fight against single-use plastics.
They have carried out numerous beach cleans and been behind the battle to encourage eateries to ditch plastic cups, cutlery etc for a much more ecofriendly alternative.
Now Portsmouth Football Club has officially signed up to the Final Straw Solent campaign, it would have been difficult to find a more high profile organisation to help get that message across.
The Blues have already taken steps towards supporting the environment with reusable drinks bottles being used at their training ground at Copnor.
But now they are taking their efforts much further by switching to a recyclable match-day programme, fitting energy-efficient lightbulbs and broadcasting messages from players on the big screen to promote car sharing and other eco-friendly advice.
The Fratton Park players are icons in the eyes of the fans and if the faithful can see their heroes getting on board then the uptake from those in the city who follow the team should be high.
