A happy outcome in time for Christmas

- Anna Norland-Marks

concerns to those from the local authority who are responsible for Inclusion in the city.

Personally, I had an 18-month battle to get my son an Education Health Care Plan in order to provide my son with the Early Intervention which is recognised so widely as being crucial to ensuring the best outcome for children with autism in the long term. I was pleading for intensive support in school and to have specialist autism professionals train the staff at his school so he could receive an education which he would benefit where his needs would not only be understood but strategies would be put in place to help him overcome any difficulties he experienced and that his Early Years Education experience would be a success.

Stephen offered to support me and write a letter to the local authority if I needed.

That is exactly what I’d hope for from our local MP – that you can approach them with an issue and they will assure you that they will take action within their means as they are for the people. I had to endure several distressing meetings and a trip to tribunal to ensure this little superstar got the necessary help and provision for his first year in school but he got it. This is a child who two years ago was assessed as being at a developmental age of just 24 months!! He was given the support to catch up and he’s done it!

My only hope is that we can see more children have a similar outcome but perhaps without such a fight. However, I would like to reiterate once again, how comforting it was to know I had the support of Stephen Morgan throughout the process.

My son has been so excited by all the Stephen Morgan posters that are displayed in the windows up and down the streets. More excited to spot the signs than Christmas lights and in fact, more excited to see Stephen than he is Santa.

This year, Macauley will star as Joseph in his Christmas play which for me is better than any gift Santa could bring as not so long ago, I was told he might never talk.

I am just so grateful and recently, we had the opportunity to go and see Stephen Morgan and this little boy was happier than a kid on Christmas morning and as his mum, so am I.
