With a spring in their step
New Theatre Royal announces an eclectic and exciting line-up of shows for its forthcoming season
A PORTSMOUTH theatre has unveiled a whole host of drama, dance and comedy shows for its ‘biggest season yet.’
New Theatre Royal in Guildhall Walk, Portsmouth has announced its Spring 2020 Season.
Director and chief executive Scott Ramsay said: ‘This next season is our biggest yet, with something for everyone to enjoy and dozens of new productions and partnerships. We can’t wait to welcome our audiences.’
Highlights include theatrical adaptations of three classic pieces of literature. Dracula: The Bloody Truth is an unashamedly silly comedy based on the horror novel, while Jane Eyre is a captivating and broodingly powerful adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s gothic romance. The War of the Worlds , a New Theatre Royal co-production created by Rhum and Clay, is HG Wells’ sci-fi novel for the modern age, playfully reimagined for our era of ‘fake news’. The 2020 season also sees the return of Flux Festival of Dance and Visual Theatre, this year welcoming the internationally acclaimed Akram Khan Company to Portsmouth for the first time. Festival of the Sea also returns for 2020, with a spotlight on The Problem With Plastic (and what to do about it). The programme includes English Chamber Orchestra’s musical celebration Sailing The Centuries among many other shows.
New Theatre Royal have also announced a new stage adaptation of The Snow Queen for Christmas 2020. Based on the much-loved fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen, it was also the inspiration for Disney’s Frozen.
