Rotary club goes the extra mile with fundraising efforts

-

ROTARY club members who have formed a bond of friendship and fellowship have been doing some excellent work for charity, both in their community and overseas.

As Christmas draws ever closer, the Rotary Club of Fareham has sprung into action, as it fundraises for the Sand Dams Project and the Congenital Myotonic Dystrophy Support Group, which operates in Hampshire.

The Sand Dams Project aims to provide clean drinking water to 1,000 people in African drylands, with a filtering system to prevent evaporation and ensure those using it are free from water-borne diseases.

So far, the Rotary Club has raised £9,249 towards this project.

For the Congenital Myotonic Dystrophy Support Group, £411 has been raised – but the cause is much closer to the heart of Fareham president Michael Cleaves.

He said: ‘I was born with muscular dystrophy myself and know first-hand how it can affect people’s lives.

‘I felt supporting children with this muscle-wasting condition locally would help to provide information, advice, care, support and research.

‘About 9,500 people in the UK have a form of myotonic dystrophy yet not many will have heard of it – I hope our endeavours will help people to understand much more about this condition.’

To help raise even more money for these causes before Christmas arrives, the Rotary Club members will be taking to the tills.

The members will be meeting shoppers at the Sainsbury’s supermarket in Broad cut, Fareham, from Wednesday, December 18 to Friday, December 20.

A spokeswoman from the group added: ‘If shoppers can spare a little towards these and our other Rotary charities while they shop, that would be wonderful.’
