Johnson was elected to run the country and look at the state of it

- Jack Wilcock

After 10 weeks in lockdown there has been so much written in the press, and I have contributed, that I got to the stage where is was time to read comments and not react.

But I could not resist when I read a letter from Geoffrey Brooking entitled ‘Mordaunt should back Johnson’ on May 30.

Geoffrey Brooking gives his personal opinion of the sacking of Penny Mordaunt as defence secretary by Boris Johnson when he was elected as leader of the Conservative Party. He then goes on to say that Ms Mordaunt is now using the hint of trouble in Boris's administration to get a shot at the top job by commenting on the recent behaviour of Dominic Cummings. But when Mr Brooking says that Dominic Cummings did what any normal human being would do under those circumstances this is completely untrue. During the lockdown, the public have been in the same situation but have observed the rules and stayed in isolation. Apart from Robert Jenrick, as Mr Brooking points out. As for asking Ms Mordaunt to resign or shut up and support her leader, which is what she was elected to do, then Mr Brooking I am afraid that is something that remains to be seen. After all Boris Johnson was elected to run the country and look at the state that it is in now. Now this is a first. I do agree with Mr Brooking regarding the media scrum outside

Mr Cummings's house as this did nothing to help the situation.

How refreshing it was to see piece of journalistic brilliance by Verity Lush on Saturday. Verity summed up the situation admirably and put things into the right perspective. I hope that Geoffrey Brooking read it for himself.
