What became of England’s likely lads?
On his only England under-19 Test appearance, Sam Northeast scored two centuries.
Playing against Bangladesh under19s at Derby in July 2009, the opening batsman scored 107 and 149 in a drawn encounter.
Of the 11 players who appeared in that game, he is one of eight who have never progressed to winning a senior international cap for England.
Here, The News looks at what became of Northeast’s colleagues from that game in the east Midlands (in batting order).
Though there are some very familiar names, there are others the average cricket fan might struggle to recall ...
Jack Manuel: Played one first class game for Worcestershire in 2011 scoring five runs in two innings against Somerset - as well as 10 T20 games and 7 List A matches.
James Vince: The Hampshire skipper has made 13 Test appearances, scoring 548 runs at 24.90. His career first class average (38.92) is less than Northeast’s 39.16.
David Willey: The Yorkshire all-rounder has won 46 ODI caps, taking 52 wickets and scoring 279 runs.
Ben Stokes: National hero. World Cup winner. BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2019. Performer of second miracle of Headingley last year. Has scored 4,056 runs in 63 Tests at 36.54 - with eight centuries - and taken 173 wickets. Also played 95 ODIs and 26 T20s for England.
Luke Wells: Has scored 7,779 first class runs since his Sussex debut in 2010 at 35.19.
Azeem Rafiq: Has taken 79 wickets in 39 first class games for Yorkshire and Derbyshire. Has also taken 102 T20 wickers for Yorkshire in 95 games.
Hamza Riazzudin: Considered good enough to skipper the England under-19s, the Hampshire all-rounder, above, only made nine first class appearances for the county - five in the Championship. Also played 27 List A games for the county and 17 T20 appearances. Released in 2013, he later played for Buckinghamshire.
Tom Poynton: Made 47 first class appearances for Derbyshire as a wicket-keeper between 2007-2016.
Chris Wood: The Hampshire seamer has taken over 100 wickets in all three formats for the county. No Hampshire bowler has ever taken more than his 131 T20 wickets.
Nathan Buck: Has taken 250 first class wickets in 94 games for Leicestershire since his debut in 2009. Has also bagged 69 and 61 wickets respectively in List A and T20 appearances.
