Jackett: Trading players for others could happen next term
KENNY Jackett believes a transfer swap shop could come to the fore with EFL clubs staring into the financial abyss.
And the Pompey boss is determined his team will adapt quicker and smarter than their rivals across a very different terrain for the game moving forward.
Football clubs in England and beyond are facing trying to survive and operate with huge holes in their budget caused by the impact of the coronavirus crisis.
With huge cash shortfalls, Jackett can envisage a situation where outfits will attempt to trade with the assets they have in terms of players under contract.
He said: ‘We have a good core of players under contract.
‘We would need a good idea of what the structure for next year will be like before we add any players.
‘We do feel we have a good core for the Championship or League One.
‘During the turnover from one season to the next, do you need to add players? Usually you do. You need more players and more freshness.
‘Whether that comes now from adding more permanent players, adding loans or now actually trading some of the players you have for others, that could be the case as well for next year.
‘We’ll have to wait and see what the picture looks like. As ever though, all we’d be making sure is our recruitment people know the market and exactly what is out there.
‘We have to react to what suits us and quicker than other people.’
Pompey will have 17 senior players tied to deals next season, with four loan additions returning to their parent clubs.
Jackett added: ‘I do feel you have to love the players you have.
‘There will be opportunities for younger players that may not have been there, definitely.
‘So getting the most out of what you have, developing your own players has to be first on the horizon rather than looking outside all the time.
‘It will be cautious at the start and how it then looks like going on may be different.
‘There’s been talk of when the season starts do we extend the window? How will that look?
‘But across Europe it will be the same situation, so maybe some type of agreement can be made for all the leagues.
‘That could help people’s flexibility to trade players or take players on loan.
‘In terms of what next year will look like it’s hard to plan, other than with the ones you have under contract.
‘That’s the best plan at the moment and I’m pleased with my core of players.’
