Knitters needed for charity book
Skills required to make rabbits and penguins for naval parents’ children
THOSE with knitting needle skills are being called upon to help a city charity with its latest book to help children with parents on deployment.
The Naval Children’s Charity, based in Stamshaw, has commissioned a second book to help children of Royal Navy personnel understand why their parents are away and cope with their emotions.
Henry and the Time Penguin, the follow up to Zoe and the Time Rabbit written and illustrated by Sarah McMenemy, is aimed at children where their mum is the parent who goes away and knitters are needed to create more penguins and rabbits to accompany the books when they are sent out.
Clare Scherer, chief executive of the Naval Children’s Charity said: ‘As the only charity solely dedicated to the needs of the children of our amazing naval personnel, both serving and veteran, we are delighted to be able to offer this book for mums who have to go away on deployment, leaving behind their young children.
‘For any family that needs help, we would urge you to get in touch, particularly in these difficult times, and see what we can do for you.’
To request a copy of either book, families can email book@navalchildrenscharity. org.uk, giving their name and address and specifying which book they would like.
Both books can also be downloaded via navalchildrenscharity.org.uk
The patterns for the Time Rabbits or Penguins can also be found on the website or can be emailed out upon request via book@navalchildrenscharity.org.uk
Once complete, Time Rabbits or Penguins should be sent to Naval Children’s Charity, 311 Twyford Avenue, Stamshaw, Portsmouth, PO2 8RN.
The charity has been helping the children of naval families for nearly 200 years since its first orphanage was opened in 1825.
The team provides compassionate help and support through grants for families struggling financially.
