Never have so many...

Witnessed in the skies over our embattled nation in 1940, the Battle of Britain was commemorat­ed last week (September 15).

Many, though – including Churchill and Hitler – considered invasion of our islands impossible while ships and submarines of the Royal Navy and Commonweal­th navies maintained command of the English Channel.

Some 2,945 aviators were 'The Few', one fifth representi­ng 13 nations. Also among The Few were 56 Fleet Air Arm aircrew from the Royal Navy, young men flying with RAF squadrons and two (804 and 808) Naval Air Squadrons. Four naval aviators, including one Royal Marine, were ‘fighter aces’.

We salute them all.

Although it is not local, it affects many of The News’s readers living in high-rise tower blocks. Ms Mordaunt,

I was disgusted to discover that you voted against recommenda­tions put forward by the Grenfell Tower Inquiry. On your conscience be it, but I voted for you at the last election, believing you were a compassion­ate caring individual who had received the correct type of upbringing by your parents. I am 74 years of age and my father always believed that a Conservati­ve politician always puts profit before principle, and as he was a good, honest, hardworkin­g man, would never ever vote for a Conservati­ve. I always thought that his views were a result of the hardships he had encountere­d during his life, and his experience­s of being abandoned by Winston Churchill and the British government while defending the island of Crete during the Second World War.

Although he vehemently believed a Tory would protect business first, over the individual, I did not believe that theory so have voted Conservati­ve.

How I regret that decision, since you have become my member of parliament. Your views and actions seem to uphold those beliefs of my father, and I believe you fall short of principle, in your desire of personal ambition, and feel sorry that you have let down all constituen­ts with principles and compassion, who must be reflecting on what sort of soulless institutio­n the new
