the supremacy of Parliament, and their role was to advise, not to subvert the law making process.

But in order to shore up the power base of the UK Conservati­ve party, David Cameron overturned the parliament­ary advisory convention, and agreed to be bound by the result 2016 EU referendum.

It divided our nation, set us on a collision course with our European neighbours, diminished the role of parliament by handing dictatoria­l powers to ministers, made scapegoats of essential immigrant labour, and coarsened the language and truthfulne­ss of public political debate.

Patently we cannot change the course of history, but we can so easily be lead down the same deceptive paths by those who aspire to become our national leaders.
