But in order to shore up the power base of the UK Conservative party, David Cameron overturned the parliamentary advisory convention, and agreed to be bound by the result 2016 EU referendum.
It divided our nation, set us on a collision course with our European neighbours, diminished the role of parliament by handing dictatorial powers to ministers, made scapegoats of essential immigrant labour, and coarsened the language and truthfulness of public political debate.
Patently we cannot change the course of history, but we can so easily be lead down the same deceptive paths by those who aspire to become our national leaders.
