New code of conduct brought in at council
WORK is being done to strengthen a council’s code of conduct.
The new document for councillors and staff will be included in a revised version of East Hampshire District Council’s constitution following a review.
The code of conduct says councillors should ‘hold their peers to account and challenge any conduct which is unbefitting to the role and position of councillor’.
Councillors approved the constitution at full council last week.
Cllr Richard Millard, council leader, said: ‘The code of conduct will be a much more useful tool for councillors, giving them better, more specific and more up-to-date guidance.
‘Keeping these documents under review and up-to-date is essential for any well-run organisation, so it is vital they are properly discussed and examined by full council as we continue to improve the council’s governance.’
The new constitution, will be shared with parish councils.
